Thinking About Buying a Health Test? Read This First

The market for direct-to-consumer health testing has exploded in recent years.

From food sensitivity tests and microbiome analyses to hormone panels and genetic reports, it’s now possible to order a wide range of health tests online without ever speaking to a healthcare professional.

The marketing is often persuasive. Promises of personalised insights, root-cause answers and tailored health recommendations can be particularly appealing if you’ve been struggling with symptoms and haven’t found the answers you’re looking for.

As a Nutritional Therapist, I understand the appeal. In fact, I regularly use testing in my practice when it is appropriate to do so.

However, there is something I see time and time again that concerns me.

When Testing Comes Before Strategy

Many people come to me having already spent hundreds of pounds on health tests before seeking professional advice.

Often, they have purchased tests that aren’t the most appropriate starting point for their particular symptoms or health goals. In some cases, the results have led them down a rabbit hole of further testing, supplements, dietary restrictions and anxiety without bringing them any closer to understanding why they feel unwell.

I am not against testing. Far from it.

The right test, for the right person, at the right time, can provide valuable information and help guide an effective plan.

The problem is that testing should be driven by a question.

Too often, people are sold a test before they have identified what question they are actually trying to answer.

More Testing Doesn’t Always Mean More Answers

There is a common assumption that if a test is available to buy, it must be useful.

Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

Some tests have a stronger evidence base than others. Some can provide interesting information but limited practical value. Some are marketed in ways that exaggerate what the results can actually tell us.

Even good tests can be unhelpful if they are used in the wrong circumstances.

The result can be confusion rather than clarity.

The Cost of Following the Wrong Path

One of the biggest issues I see is that people can become focused on test results rather than on the bigger picture.

For example, a report may identify multiple foods to avoid, a collection of microbiome imbalances, or various biomarkers highlighted in red.

Suddenly, the person’s attention is directed towards fixing every abnormality on the report.

Meanwhile, the original symptoms remain unchanged.

I’ve worked with people who have:

  • Eliminated large numbers of foods unnecessarily
  • Spent significant amounts on supplements
  • Purchased multiple rounds of additional testing
  • Become increasingly confused about what is actually driving their symptoms

In many cases, a thorough assessment of their health history, symptoms, lifestyle and diet would have helped identify a more appropriate starting point.

Questions to Ask Before Buying Any Health Test

Before investing in testing, ask yourself:

  • What question am I trying to answer?
  • How will the result change what I do next?
  • Is this the most appropriate test for my symptoms?
  • What are the limitations of the test?
  • Will I know how to interpret the results?

If you’re unsure of the answers, it may be worth seeking guidance before spending your money.

Testing Should Support a Plan, Not Replace One

Good healthcare starts with understanding the individual, not with ordering a test.

A test should be a tool that supports clinical decision-making, not the starting point for a search for problems.

Sometimes testing is exactly the right next step.

Sometimes there are more useful, cost-effective or evidence-based alternatives.

And sometimes no testing is needed at all.
